Canada Day 2001
Canada's National Anthem / L' Hymne National
du Canada
A Quebec judge named Sir Adolphe-Basile
Routhier wrote a patriotic poem in French entitled O Canada which was later set to music
by composer Calixa Lavallée. It was first sung on June 24, 1880. Another judge named R.
Stanley Weir wrote the English lyrics to O Canada in the year 1908, with slight
modifications made in 1980. O Canada was officially proclaimed as Canada's National Anthem
in 1980, one hundred years after it was first sung.

O Canada! Our
home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. |
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux.
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée,
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits. |
